BATS Bats in the UK have suffered a population decline due to a decrease in roosting spaces, feeding habitat losses and various ‘pest’ control measures. Placing two or more bat-boxes close together facing different directions, allows bats to respond to changes in temperature by moving between houses as needed. It may take some time for bats to find their way to your bat-box. Persevere as the scarcity of suitable roosting sites threatens bat’s survival. Try planting scented night-time flowering evening primrose which attracts moths – on which bats feed. OUR TIMBER All our timber is grown, felled and planked on managed estates and plantations along the North Downs, Surrey, England. Great care is given to the selection process of our timber and the re-planting process of previously felled areas. The timber is dried in solar kilns which use direct sunlight to dry the timber and renewable photovoltaic sources to power fans to circulate the air around the timber. The dried timber is then planned and hand-crafted in our workshops in Reigate, Surrey. The end results are fine, unique, handmade products that will be a pleasure to own, pleasing to the eye and extremely durable. Our beehives and animal boxes are made exclusively from Western Red Cedar. The species was introduced into the UK over a hundred years ago, and is now naturalised in Britain. The red-brown timber has a tight straight grain with few knots. It is valued for its distinct appearance, aroma, lightness and its high natural resistance to decay. This weather-resistant property is due to ‘Thujaplicin’, which is a chemical substance, found in the tree. It serves as a natural fungicide, thereby preventing the wood from rotting. This property ensures that Western Red Cedar products will last far longer than other timbers outside. It also means that the timber will not require treatment with preservatives or paint.
Made from Western Red Cedar – so no need to paint or treat and will last up to 40 years outside.
