Hedgehogs: The European Hedgehog lives in woodland, farmland and suburban areas. It is nocturnal. If threatened it may roll itself into a ball, protecting itself against potential predators with its spines. It is omnivorous feeding on a wide range of invertebrates, but preferring slugs earthworms, beetles and other insects. It will occasionally eat frogs, rodents and birds’ eggs. Encouraging Hedgehogs can be an effective form of pest control. A single hedgehog can keep an average garden free of pests by eating up to 200 grams of insects each night. Suitable winter nests “Hibernacula” are essential if hedgehogs are to survive hibernation. In autumn, they begin to collect leaves, grass, straw, bracken, small twigs etc. and use these materials for building their nests. Hedgehogs tend to hibernate between November and mid March. Placing a hedgehog house in your garden can provides a long-term, safe habitat for a hedgehog – encouraging hibernation and nesting. Tips: Try not to use slug pellets in your garden as these can be very dangerous to hedgehogs when directly eaten or when poisoned slugs and snails are eaten. Check in bonfires before they are lit to ensure that no hedgehogs are hibernating inside. Make sure that your garden is not completely fenced off. It may be necessary to leave gaps or even make holes in fences if there are no permanent entry/exit routes for hedgehogs to come and go.
